Sovcomflot takes part in the Sakhalin Oil and Gas 2021 conference

Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk - A delegation from Sovcomflot took part in the 25th Sakhalin Oil and Gas Conference held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on 28-30 September 2021.

The main discussion topic of the conference w0as development trends in the global energy industry in the context of decarbonisation and transition to new energy sources. Special attention was paid to issues of enhancing environmental safety and emission reduction technologies. Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov, Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Pavel Sorokin, member of the Board of Directors of Sovcomflot Markus Ederer, EU Ambassador to the Russian Federation Valery Limarenko, the Governor of the Sakhalin Region and other officials and leaders of Russian and international energy companies gave presentations at the conference.

The report made by First Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Sovcomflot Sergey Popravko as part of the session on Ports, Shipbuilding and Logistics was devoted to global trends of the carbon footprint reduction in the shipping industry. In his presentation, Sergey Popravko noted, that the use of LNG as a marine fuel is the most optimal engineering solution in the short and medium term in order to comply with the current international standards for reducing air emissions in ship operation.

Compared to tankers fueled by traditional marine fuel, the use of LNG on the green series of Sovcomflot vessels has reduced CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 64,000 tonnes in three years of operation, which is equivalent to a reduction in the level of carbon dioxide that can be achieved by planting a forest of 1.5 million new trees.

Almost all of PAO Sovcomflot's vessels under construction provide for the possibility of using LNG as marine fuel. In June 2021, an agreement was reached to charter two green tankers from Sakhalin Energy (operator of the Sakhalin-2 project). At present, Sovcomflot and Sakhalin Energy are considering the possibility of bunkering these vessels from the LNG terminal of the Prigorodnoye port.

The successful implementation of this project will contribute to the environmental safety of the Russian Far East.
