His appointment to the second chamber of the UK’s parliament is the result of a Conservative hereditary peers’ by-election following the death of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu in August.

Barrister Fairfax, who holds the hereditary title of Lord Fairfax of Cameron, has been a director with the Russian shipowner’s UK arm since 2005.

Fairfax told TradeWinds he sometimes feels as though he has “lived his life in reverse” after previously serving in the Lords — a place often seen as the stamping ground of the UK’s more senior parliamentarians — from the comparatively young age of 21.

He says he had been considering a return to parliamentary life in three to five year’s time.

But he now plans to dovetail his parliamentary duties with his day job at SCF and will be keeping the shipping industry interests in mind in his new role.

The motorcycling peer, who famously took part in a charity ride from Moscow, Scotland, to Moscow, Russia, and back again in 2005 has been a guiding legal light at SCF (UK) over the last 10 years.
